Choice A “Is the Risky Option”
Hiring a private caregiver without a home care agency being involved, you would need to interview and hire that person you would want in your home caring for your loved one. With this choice, you become the employer.
Questions to ask Yourself Before Hiring Private Caregivers?
If you employ a private caregiver in your home, the IRS and state taxing authorities classify you as a household employer. If you pay over the wage limit of approximately $1700 in a year to any one private caregiver, you must report these wages, along with file tax forms and payroll taxes. In most cases people make the choice to not fulfill their obligations as an employer and decide to pay their private caregivers “under the table”. Payment of wages by check, cash or other compensation, with the intention of avoiding payroll taxes is illegal. This is also tax fraud and could result in charges of tax evasion or perjury
Choice B “Is the Safest Option”
A Non-Medical Home Care Agency who employs its caregivers is the most cost effective and safest option for the client. The Agency is responsible and liable for the caregivers in the home.
