Older adults have a higher risk of falling. Muscle weakness, joint pain, medication side effects, and health conditions all impact stability while walking around or going up and down the stairs. Since your mom fell and broke her wrist, you’re trying to make all areas of her home safer. It’s time to improve safety in the garage. Where do you start?

Clear Clutter

Gather a few family members or friends and clean out the garage. Items that haven’t been used in years can be sold, given away, trashed, or recycled. Everything else needs to go in its appropriate place. Small items can be combined in small plastic storage containers. Larger ones can have their own container.

Add storage shelves in out of the way locations in the garage. Metal, wood, or plastic shelving units will store all of your items. You want items that are easy to trip over like tires, hoses, and tools. Some tools can hang on walls. Others can go together in bins on shelves.

Install Rails on Stairs

Stairs going into the house should have rails. If they don’t, install them or have a contractor do it. While you’re installing rails, check that the stairs are sturdy and not loose or cracked.

If the stairs are in poor shape, you could have new stairs installed. It may be cheaper to purchase fiberglass mobile home stairs that don’t warp or rot.

Fix Cracks and Uneven Flooring

Over time, a garage floor may settle and crack. If it does, it can become uneven and become hazardous. Look for cracks and fill them if they’re even, If they’re uneven, you need to talk to a contractor about making the floor level.

Make Sure Lighting is Bright

Check the lights next. If the lighting in the garage is dim, new lighting fixtures or bulb replacements are important changes to consider. You want the stairs to be well-illuminated.

CFL bulbs were recommended years ago, but it can take a few minutes before they warm up and give off full lighting. LED bulbs are bright from the start and are also eco-friendly.

Elder care services also help with safety around the home. Why did your mom fall? If she takes medications that cause dizziness, a caregiver can watch your mom after taking the medications and make sure she sits down or has someone to hold onto while she walks or stands up. If she has joint pain, elder care services like mobility and medication reminders will help.
