So many things go into a healthy diet. When your parents learn they have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or pre-diabetes, the first thing their doctor will ask about is their diet. They may not have put a lot of thought into it. How healthy is their diet? 

Many older adults have spent so many years eating foods that are convenient but not the healthiest choice. Here’s a three-step plan to help your parents make healthier choices when it comes to meals and snacks. 

Do a Full Clean-Out 

Start by going through the freezer, refrigerator, pantry, and cupboards. You want to donate things that haven’t been opened and compost or toss the rest. Rinse out jars and bottles per your city or town’s recycling rules. 

You’re looking to remove items that have added sugar rather than natural fruit sugars. Get rid of things made with all-purpose flour rather than whole grains. If something has a very high sodium content, that may need to go, too. 

Stock Up on Healthier Choices 

Once the less nutritious food choices are cleared out, inventory what your parents need. If you donated all of their pasta, replace it with whole grain or whole wheat pasta. All of the white rice that was removed should be replaced with whole grains like brown rice, farro, barley, and quinoa. 

In place of potato chips and crackers, purchase whole-grain pitas, cut them into smaller triangles, and make baked pitas. That’s a great snack when served with hummus, guacamole, or another healthier dip. 

Store-bought bread usually has added sugar or corn syrup. Carefully read labels. If you can’t find anything suitable, make whole grain bread at home. 

Many adults do not meet the daily guidelines for fruit and vegetables. That’s likely where you’ll need to stock up the most. Your parents should be eating around two cups of fruit each day and three cups of vegetables. That’s 14 cups of fruit and 21 cups of vegetables per week for one person. 

Fatty cuts of meat and processed meats like ham and deli meats aren’t healthy options. Replace them with lean cuts of beef, pork, poultry breasts, and seafood. 

Stock up on low-sodium canned beans. Kidney beans and chickpeas are good options. Both are high in fiber and are versatile, and your parents can use them in many dishes. Kidney beans are a good source of iron, too. 

Finally, go through and get rid of white flour and baking mixes. Replace them with various flours such as whole wheat flour, buckwheat flour, and chickpea flour.
