Caring for aging parents may be new ground. When you’ve never had to help an older adult, navigating the balance of pushing to get things done and being respectful of feelings is challenging. Remember that it’s a challenge all family caregivers experience. You can watch these movies to see how others handle family care.

August: Osage County

Meryl Streep takes the lead in this movie about a woman whose husband disappears and is later found drowned. She has cancer and has a live-in caregiver, but her daughters return with their significant others and children for their dad’s funeral. This family gathering is going to bring frustrations, joys, and fears to the surface.

Nebraska

This movie is unique in that it’s filmed entirely in black and white. Bruce Dern plays Woody Grant. He received a letter stating he has won a million dollars. He’s going to walk from Montana to Nebraska to claim his money. Police bring him to the station where his son picks him up.

He’s determined and takes off again. The family talks about putting Woody in assisted living, but his son has another plan. He decides to show his dad the letter is a scam by driving him to Nebraska.

Still Mine

You may need tissues to make it through this touching, sometimes frustrating movie that’s based on a true story. James Cromwell plays an aging husband whose wife’s memory is starting to slide. She forgets she’s cooking. She wanders.

After she falls, he realizes she needs a safer home. He’s determined to build a house that will be easier for her to move around in. Town leaders do everything possible to keep him from achieving his goal.

The Upside

The Upside is a remake of a French film called The Intouchables. This remake stars Nicole Kidman, Bryan Cranston, and Kevin Hart.

Hart is a recently paroled man who needs a job. He’s having a hard time finding work and plans to apply for a janitorial job in an apartment building. Instead, he’s hired to be a caregiver to Cranson, who is a quadriplegic. It’s not a job he wanted, but he’s soon forming a strong bond and finding himself challenged in ways he’s never been challenged before.

When was the last time you took a break? Self-care is one of the most important parts of elder care. If you’re not taking time to do things for yourself, you increase your risk of burning out. An elder care agency is there to ensure you can take breaks without leaving your parents alone. You choose the schedule that best suits your needs.
